What Is ICSI Treatment?
ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is an advanced fertilization technique used as part of IVF, in which an embryologist carefully injects a single selected sperm directly into a mature egg to support fertilization when sperm-related factors or previous fertilization difficulties are present.

Fertility Assessment & Ovarian Stimulation
The process begins with a fertility consultation to review medical history, ovarian reserve, semen analysis and previous treatment. Fertility medicines are then given to stimulate the ovaries so that multiple eggs can develop, with ultrasound scans and hormone tests used to monitor their growth.

Egg Retrieval & Sperm Collection
When the follicles are ready, a trigger injection is given to complete egg maturation before egg retrieval. The eggs are collected through an ultrasound-guided procedure, while a semen sample is collected and prepared on the same day. Frozen or surgically retrieved sperm may also be used when required.

Sperm Preparation & Selection
In the embryology laboratory, the semen sample is processed to identify suitable sperm for ICSI. An embryologist examines the available sperm under magnification and selects an appropriate sperm for each mature egg being treated.

ICSI Injection & Fertilization Check
Using specialized micromanipulation equipment, the embryologist carefully injects a single selected sperm directly into the cytoplasm of each suitable mature egg. The injected eggs are then kept in controlled laboratory conditions and checked for signs of normal fertilization.

Embryo Culture & Development
Successfully fertilized eggs are cultured in the laboratory and monitored as they develop into embryos, typically over several days. The embryology team assesses their development to determine which embryos may be suitable for transfer or freezing.

Embryo Transfer & Pregnancy Test
Depending on the treatment plan, a suitable embryo may be transferred into the uterus during the same cycle or frozen for transfer later. After embryo transfer, medications are continued as advised and a pregnancy test is scheduled, usually around two weeks later, to assess the treatment outcome.
Who May Be Advised to Consider ICSI?
ICSI may be recommended when sperm-related factors or previous fertilization problems could make conventional IVF less effective. It may be considered in selected patients with:
Significant Male-Factor Infertility
ICSI may be advised when semen analysis shows a very low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm quality or a combination of these factors that may affect fertilization.
Azoospermia or Surgically Retrieved Sperm
When sperm are not found in the ejaculate, sperm may sometimes be retrieved from the epididymis or testes and used with ICSI if suitable sperm are available.
Previous Poor or Failed IVF Fertilization
ICSI may be considered when a previous conventional IVF cycle resulted in unexpectedly low fertilization or complete fertilization failure.
Limited or Frozen Sperm Samples
