What is IVF treatment?
IVF, or In Vitro Fertilization, is an assisted reproductive treatment in which eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized with sperm in an embryology laboratory. The resulting embryos are observed as they develop, and a selected embryo may then be transferred into the uterus. In Nepal, IVF is also commonly referred to as test tube baby treatment, although embryos are cultured in specialized laboratory dishes and incubators rather than test tubes.
IVF Treatment Process, step by step
Initial Consultation
Your IVF journey begins with a consultation with our fertility specialist. We review your medical and fertility history, previous investigations or treatments and any factors that may affect conception. Additional fertility tests may be recommended before your treatment plan is finalized.
Ovarian Stimulation
Fertility medicines are used to stimulate the ovaries so that multiple follicles can develop during the treatment cycle. Your response is monitored with ultrasound scans and, where appropriate, blood tests. The medication dose and treatment plan may be adjusted according to your response.
Egg Retrieval
When the follicles have reached an appropriate stage of development, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries using an ultrasound-guided procedure. Egg retrieval is generally carried out with sedation or anesthesia according to your clinical requirements.
Fertilization and Embryo Culture
The collected eggs are prepared in the laboratory and combined with sperm for fertilization. When clinically appropriate, techniques such as ICSI may be recommended instead of conventional fertilization. Successfully fertilized eggs are monitored as the embryos develop in the laboratory.
Embryo Transfer
A suitable embryo is selected for transfer into the uterus. Embryo transfer is performed using a thin catheter placed through the cervix. The number and timing of embryos transferred are determined according to individual circumstances and your fertility specialist's recommendation. Suitable additional embryos may be considered for freezing for possible future treatment.
Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up
After embryo transfer, our team will tell you when to take your pregnancy test. If the result is positive, follow-up evaluation is arranged to assess the early pregnancy and discuss the next stage of care.
Note: Your IVF plan should be finalized only after your reports, diagnosis and individual circumstances are reviewed by the fertility team.
