What is IUI treatment?
IUI stands for intrauterine insemination. During IUI, a prepared sperm sample is placed directly into the uterus close to ovulation. Fertilization still occurs naturally inside a fallopian tube; IUI simply shortens the distance sperm need to travel to reach the egg.
IUI procedure step by step
Fertility consultation and review
We review your menstrual history, previous fertility treatment and available reports. Depending on what has already been completed, your specialist may discuss tubal assessment, ultrasound, semen analysis or other investigations relevant to your case.
Natural or monitored treatment cycle
IUI cycles may be timed around natural ovulation or supported with medication and ultrasound monitoring. When ovarian stimulation is used, careful monitoring helps reduce the risk of multiple pregnancy and may lead to treatment adjustment or cancellation.
Timing ovulation
Ovulation may be identified naturally or with a trigger injection, and IUI is scheduled around this time. ASRM guidelines support a single insemination within 0–36 hours of an hCG trigger, rather than one “perfect” hour.
Sperm collection and preparation
The semen sample is processed so motile sperm for insemination are concentrated and separated from seminal fluid and less suitable cells. Post‑preparation results can also provide useful information about your expected chance of success.
Insemination
Prepared sperm is placed into the uterus using a thin flexible catheter. The procedure takes only a few minutes, usually without anesthesia, though some patients may experience brief cramping or light spotting.
Pregnancy test and follow-up
Before you leave, your team gives you a date for your pregnancy test and instructions about medication, activity and when to contact the clinic.

- For unexplained infertility, IUI with ovulation medication roughly doubles the pregnancy rate compared with no treatment.
What to consider
- Requires at least one open, healthy fallopian tube and a suitable prepared sperm sample.
- Usually not recommended for severe male-factor infertility, significant tubal disease or moderate-to-severe endometriosis, where IVF is generally advised.
- Success is counted across several cycles; if pregnancy has not occurred after three to six cycles, moving to IVF is usually discussed.
- When ovulation-stimulating medication is used, the chance of twins or higher-order multiples increases.
- Mild cramping or light spotting for a day or two afterwards is common, and the risk of infection is small.
- Pregnancy or live birth cannot be guaranteed in any single cycle.
